The Maths Centre hosted a very successful Maps and Mirrors and Career Day for grade 12 learners from three project schools in Postmasburg on Saturday May the 14th. The aim of the event was to orientate matriculants with regards to varsity education, especially the first year. Fifteen tertiary institutions and education organizations participated in the event, despite the fact that it coincided with Open Days at several universities.

Two-hundred-and fifty learners attended the event and received information relating to tertiary education – and bursary applications. The marketing team from Standard Bank also encouraged learners to open bank accounts as part of our “Responsible Citizenship” drive.

The South African National Defence Force’s Lohatla Combat Training Centre supported the Maths Centre’s advocacy campaign again this year. And plans are being discussed to host a joint Youth Leadership Camp later this year.

The Northern Cape’s very own university, the Sol Plaatje University was also present and made a strong case as to why learners should consider pursuing their studies at the institutions.

The Maths Centre provided learners with bursary application forms as well as information on how to start your own business for those with an entrepreneurial spirit. Leaflets on Career Guidance and study techniques were also distributed. The Health and Wellness SETA also promoted their programmes for young people.

TADS engaged learners on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse as they are most vulnerable. The aim was not only to focus on careers, but the holistic development of our youth.

The marketing team from Standard Bank encouraged learners to open bank account as they will soon study at tertiary institutions and will hopefully successfully compete for bursaries. The after care programme will also focus on other aspect of citizenship such as getting a driver’s license.
